Bird of the Month: the Humboldt Penguin

A little-known penguin species is the Humboldt Penguin. There are only about a couple of thousand left, which is mostly due to human activity.

Habitat

Nope. Humboldt Penguins do not live in Antarctica. You can find them on the coasts of Peru and Chile. They live in the sea and nest on rocky shores.

Language

Unlike most other Latin Americans, Humboldt Penguins prefer to speak French. Not because it is their native tongue, but because it makes them feel better than others. Speaking Spanish with a thick French accent works too.

Food

Humboldts love their sushi. Preferably prepared by a French chef (even though sushi is Japanese..). Recently, it has become increasingly difficult for a Humboldt to find good sushi because of overeating by human sushi addicts.

Sports

Humboldt Penguins suck in almost all sports. Not because they’re not gifted athletes (swimming up to 48 kph!), but because they are too lazy to practice. A notable exception is curling. Humboldt Penguins won all but one of the gold medals in curling in the last five Non-Flying Birds Olympics.

Dating

The problem with Humboldt Penguins is that they’re all a little narcissistic. The only way to make Humboldts stop talking about themselves during a date, is to stuff them with well-made sushi in an expensive restaurant.

Looks

Yes, most Humboldt Penguins look pretty good. Don’t ever tell them though. They will go on and on about it. Their signature pink patches on their face and feet are actually meant to keep the Humboldts cool in a warmer climate.
